Patriots, 'sharks Split Doubleheader The Camden Riversharks and Somerset Patriots split a doubleheader at TD Bank Ballpark in Bridgewater, NJ on Saturday evening, with the Patriots taking game one 5-4, and the Riversharks winning game two 4-2.
Both seven-inning games came down to the final inning, and the 'sharks led going into the bottom of the seventh in each. Camden was up 4-3 going into the bottom of the seventh in game #1, but Somerset scored two runs off of Franklin Perez to win in walk-off fashion. Then, in game #2, Felix Rodriguez took a 4-2 lead into the seventh, and (with the help of a Camden error) allowed two men to reach scoring position with just one out. But he managed to strike out Anthony Granato and Jeff Nettles, and close out the game for the 'sharks.
The hero in the second game for Camden was center fielder Wayne Lydon, who blasted two home runs to right field as a part of a three-hit, three-RBI, three-runs scored game. Lydon hit two home runs in four at-bats in game two, after notching just one in his first 443 this season.
Camden also got an RBI from Bryant Nelson in game two, who drove home Lydon to tie the score at two in the sixth inning. Somerset scored its two runs in the bottom of the fourth, after Lydon's first home run in the top of the inning, to take a 2-1 lead. Teuiris Olivares and Joe Burke drove in the two Patriot runs in that inning.
In game one, Camden had taken their 4-3 lead on a two-run home run from Brett Bonvechio in the top of the sixth inning, which scored Garrett Guzman. The 'sharks had been up 2-0 through four, but three Somerset runs in the fifth temporarily put the Patriots in front. Bonvechio's bomb gave the 'sharks the lead back, but it wouldn't last long.
In the seventh, Perez walked Granato and Jason Belcher, and then both were advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Nettles. After an intentional walk to Matt Hagen loaded the bases, Olivares hit a weak grounder to first, and Vito Chiaravalloti tried to throw home, to prevent the game-tying run. But the throw got away, and two runs scored, giving Somerset the game one victory on an error.
The game one loss went to Perez (0-2) for Camden, while Jared Gothreaux (7-8) got the win. In game 2, starter Josh Brey improved to 6-7, and Rodriguez earned his seventh save. Kip Bouknight, who allowed Lydon's second home run, took the loss to fall to 4-8.
The split moves Camden's record to 21-27 in the second half, while Somerset is now 28-19. Thanks to Newark's two wins over Long Island tonight, The 'sharks are now 6 games back of the second wild card spot, currently held by the Ducks.
Camden and Somerset will wrap up their three-game series tomorrow evening at TD Bank Ballpark, with the first pitch of game three scheduled for 5:05 PM. Ryan DiPietro (5-6, 5.16) will go for the 'sharks, against ace Jim Magrane (12-4, 2.99) of Somerset. Fans can hear every pitch of the game by tuning in to www.redzonemedia.com. |
