Torres' Heroics Cap Off Series Sweep
Frederick Torres blasted a two-run, ninth-inning homer to break a 2-2 tie, and the Riversharks held off a rally by York in the bottom of the inning, to win 4-3 at Sovereign Bank Stadium.
The win gave the 'sharks their first series sweep of the season, in their final series of the first half. But unlike the first two games of the series (which Camden won 5-0 and 10-0), this one was tight the whole way.
The 'sharks jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning, when Brian Burgamy doubled home Brett Bonvechio from first, and then Torres drove in Burgamy with an RBI single.
York struck back in the fifth, as Matt Padgett and John Purdom led off with a single and a ground rule double, respectively. Carl Loadenthal then drove home Padgett with an RBI single, and the Revs cut the deficit to 2-1.
In the seventh, Ryan Goleski led off with a solo homer, tying the score at two. Both teams were scoreless in the eighth, setting up an exciting conclusion.
First, in the top of the ninth, Junior Spivey led off for Camden with a stand-up double. But after Brett Bonvechio and Brian Burgamy both recorded outs, the 'sharks were down to their last hope in regulation. Fortunately, it was Torres, who was already three-for-three, with a walk and an RBI. He came through with a towering home run over the Arch Nemesis in left, scoring Spivey from second, and giving the 'sharks a 4-2 lead.
Things got a lot more interesting than Camden would have liked in the bottom of the frame, as Felix Rodriguez struggled with control, and walked the first two batters he faced. After a sac bunt from Padgett, Jason Aspito stood on third, and Goleski on second, with just one out. Purdom then hit a ground ball to Spivey, scoring Aspito. Spivey bobbled the ball, committing the only error of the game, and allowing Purdom to reach safely. That meant there were runners on the corners with just one out, and pinch-hitter Matt Rogelstad due up. But Rodriguez finally righted the ship, and struck out both Rogelstad and Loadenthal to end the game.
Dewon Brazelton threw seven innings as the starter for Camden, allowing two runs, and was forced to take a no-decision. Tim Bittner (1-0) threw a scoreless eighth, and was the pitcher of record when the 'sharks took the lead, so he earned the win. Felix Rodriguez picked up his fifth save of the year.
For York, reliever Jason Olson took the loss, after surrendering the game-winning home run to Torres. He's now 0-1 on the season.
The win improves Camden's record to 33-36, with one game to play in the first half. York's first half is over, and they finish 24-46. The 'sharks will travel down to Sourthern Maryland for a makeup game tomorrow night, and then come back home for a four-game series against Somerset over the weekend. The day/night doubleheader on Friday (11:00 AM/7:00 PM) begins the second half for the 'sharks.
