Vito's Big Day Highlights Blowout Win
Vito Chiaravolloti drove in six runs on two doubles and a grand slam home run, and the Camden Riversharks defeated the York Revolution 10-0 at Sovereign Bank Stadium on Tuesday night.
It was the second straight shutout win for the 'sharks, but the offense stole the show, as Camden (32-36) put up two separate five-run innings, on their way to tying their biggest run output of the season.
In the first, Chiaravolloti and Brian Burgamy each drove in two runs, and Jon Knott drove in one, as the 'sharks sent ten men to the plate, including Chris Walker twice, against York starter Shane Youman. A costly error by Matt Rogelstad also contributed to the big inning, meaning that only two of the runs counted as earned.
Youman then settled down, and faced just one over the minimum number of batters in the second through sixth innings, before exiting in the seventh. That's when things got ugly for the Revs. Facing reliever Brian Holliday, Wayne Lydon and Chris Walker led off with singles, and then advanced to third and second, respectively, on a groundout from Bryant Nelson. Jose Leon was intentionally walked to set up the double play, and Holliday struck out Knott for the second out of the inning.
Junior Spivey then fell behind 0-2 on Holliday, but managed to work a bases-loaded walk, collecting his thirty-first RBI of the season, and putting the 'sharks up 6-0. The bases remained loaded as Chiaravolloti came to the plate, and he didn't disappoint. He destroyed a ball over the 35-foot-high wall in left field, that was not only the second grand slam of the season for Camden, but also might have been the deepest home run of the year. The bomb was Vito's sixth homer of the season, a number that leads the team, and also gave him a team-leading thirty-eight runs batted in. Beyond that, it gave the 'sharks their final four runs of the game, and produced the final score of 10-0.
Tom Davey was the starting pitcher for Camden, and regrettably, the offensive theatrics overshadowed yet another excellent start from Davey. He threw five innings of shutout ball, earning the win to improve to 8-2 on the season. Josh Newman (6th), Julio Guerrero (7th), and new signee Kalen Gearhart (8th and 9th) then combined to allow just one hit, and no runs, over the next four innings, to preserve the shutout.
For York (24-45), Youman took the loss, and is now 0-3. Besides Youman and Holliday, Travis Phelps and Bob Zimmerman also pitched for the Revolution.
The 'sharks will go for their first series sweep of the season tomorrow night, as Camden and York once again do battle at Sovereign Bank. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:00, with Dewon Brazelton (3-4, 3.20) and Corey Thurman (4-3, 3.55) doing the pitching for the 'sharks and Revs, respectively.
