'Sharks, Ducks Split Doubleheader
Despite dropping the first game to their division rival Ducks, the Riversharks rallied in game 2 to split the doubleheader on Tuesday at Citibank Park. Since both teams won, Long Island and Camden’s record moves to 22-22 on the season. The reason for the twin bill was due to May 16th rainout when Camden traveled to Long Island for the first head-to-head series. In game 1, starting pitcher Josh Brey was dealt his second loss of the season. Conversely, in game 2, Camden pitcher Ryan Dipietro picked up the win and Tracey Thorpe earned a save.
In the 1st game, Camden starter Josh Brey carried a no-hitter into the bottom of the 5th inning with 2 outs until Long Island’s top of the lineup stepped up to the dish. Lew Ford, Ray Navarrete and Estee Harris knocked three consecutive RBI singles to give the Ducks the 3-0 lead. Brey was then pulled after 4 2/3 innings and Julio Guerrero came in relief. However, Camden’s offensive couldn’t muster any runs as the Sharks tallied a mere five hits. The lone start for Camden was LF Jon Knott, who went 4-4 with 4 singles. Long Island relief pitcher Robert Paulk picked up his first win.
In game 2, Long Island once again took an early lead behind starting pitcher Jake Dittler. Dittler struck out 6 of the first 9 batters, not to mention 2B Juan Francia hit in Matt Cavagnaro to take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 3rd. But, the tables turned in the next inning as Chris Walker banged a 1 out triple to right field followed by an RBI single courtesy of Bryant Nelson. The Sharks never looked back from there on, as Wayne Lydon and Junior Spivey scored on throwing errors by catcher Robert Sandora and third baseman Matt Cavagnaro. Felix Rodriguez earned his first win, while Dittler was issued his third loss.
With the season series tied at 2-2, the probable starters for Wednesday’s 6:35 PM match-up are Camden’s Nate Bump (6-2, 2.10 ERA) vs. Long Island’s Julio Mannon. 2-1, 4.13 ERA. Dave Leno will have the call from Citibank Park in Long Island.
