Walk-Off Win Sharks Rally in 9th to Beat Ducks, 8-7 The Riversharks defeated the Long Island Ducks tonight, by a final score of 8-7. A walk off single by Wayne Lydon saw the game end in dramatic fashion in the bottom of the 9th inning, after the Sharks trailed for most of the night.
Camden reliever Chris Shaver (3-3) picked up the win, as he pitched one crucial inning of hitless baseball. Long Island’s Joe Valentine (3-2) suffered the loss, as blew a save opportunity, surrendering 3 hits and 2 runs in just .2 innings of work.. With the win, the Riversharks’ season tally moves to 6-15, while Long Island’s falls to 12-9.
The Riversharks jumped out to an early lead in this game, as they posted three runs in the first inning. After a leadoff triple by center fielder Wayne Lydon was followed up by a double by designated hitter Jose Leon that gave Camden their first run of the game. The next batter was Jon Knott, who crushed a deep fly ball over the left field wall for his sixth homerun of the year, which gave the home team a 3-0 lead.
Long Island answered right back in the 2nd inning, and scored three runs of their own. The Ducks drew an early walk and then hit back to back singles to load the bases for center fielder Lew Ford. Ford then laced double to right field, clearing the bases and tying the game at 3-3.
The visitors took the lead in the third inning, as they brought two more runs across the plate. With two runners in scoring position, second baseman Matt Cavagnaro singled up the middle, driving in Victor Rodriguez and Kyle Reynolds, and giving the Ducks a 5-3 lead.
Long Island added to their lead in the 4th inning, as they tacked on one more run. With a runner on second base, Rodriguez lined a single to left field, driving in Ray Navarrete, and giving the Ducks a 6-3 lead. A solo homerun by Cavagnaro the following inning would extend the visitors’ lead yet again.
The Sharks answered back in the bottom of the 4th, and cut their deficit down to just two runs. With a runner in scoring position, Lydon picked up his second hit and first RBI of the night with a single to left field. The next batter was right fielder Chris Walker, who crushed a line drive into the right field gap for a triple that plated Lydon, and made the score 7-5 in favor of the Ducks.
Camden made it a one run game in the 7th inning, and cut the score to 7-6. With a runner in scoring position, third baseman Brett Bonvechio lined a single to left field, scoring Brian Burgamy and picking up his 27th RBI of the season.
With a one run lead heading into the final inning, the Ducks put the ball in the hands of closer Joe Valentine, who could not close the door on the Sharks. Valentine got off to a shaky start, as he gave up back to back singles to Vito Chiaravalloti and Brett Bonvechio. David Housel then entered the game to run for Chiaravalloti, and the move paid off in a big way. After a sacrifice advanced Housel and Bonvechio into scoring position, Lydon stepped to the plate and lined a base hit into center field, scoring both base runners and winning the game in dramatic walk off fashion.
The Riversharks and Ducks will play game two of their three game series tomorrow at 5:35pm. Lefty Ryan DiPietro (1-6, 5.34) will take the mound for the Riversharks, and will be opposed by right handed pitcher Josue Matos (0-1, 4.26) from Long Island. Limited seating for the game is still available. For more information, or to purchase tickets visit www.riversharks.com.
