Sharks Rally to Beat Blufish, 9-6 Sharks Score 6 Runs in the 8th Inning The Camden Riversharks defeated the Bridgeport Bluefish today, by a final score of 9-6, as they rallied for six runs in the 8th inning. Camden reliever Josh Newman (1-2) picked up the win, while Bridgeport reliever Patrick Ryan (0-1) suffered the loss. Ryan surrendered 3 hits and 3 runs without managing to retire any batters. With the win, the Riversharks’ season tally improves to 2-4, while Bridgeport’s falls to 1-5.
The Bluefish broke the scoreless tie in the 4th inning, and took a 2-0 lead. Third baseman Luis Lopez drew a two out walk before Brandon Sing stepped to the plate and crushed a deep fly ball over the left field wall for his sixth homerun of the season.
Bridgeport tacked on three more runs in the 5th inning and extended its lead. An RBI single by Enohel Polanco plated Luis Rodriguez and advanced Wilson Batista into scoring position. Two batters later, Tyrone Pendergrass tripled to center field, driving in Polanco and Rodriguez, and giving the visitors a 5-0 lead.
The Riversharks answered back in the bottom of the 5th inning, and scored their first runs of the game. Third baseman Brett Bonvechio led off with a base hit, and then catcher Jason Jacobs drove a deep fly ball over the left field wall for his second homerun of the season. The two run blast cut the Bluefish lead down to 5-2.
The Sharks continued to chip away at the lead in the 6th inning, and cut Bridgeport’s lead further. Back to back doubles by Jose Leon and Brett Bonvechio tacked on an additional run, and made the score 5-3 in favor of Bridgeport.
The Bluefish bats came to life again in the 8th inning, as they added one more run to their lead. Sing drew a lead off walk, and then stole second base. Three batters later, Rodriguez drove a base hit to left field, scoring Sing, and upping the score to 6-3 in favor of the visitors.
Camden rallied for six runs in the bottom of the 8th inning, and took their first lead of the game. First, Leon went deep, as he tucked a high fly ball just inside the left field foul pole for a two run homerun that cut the Sharks deficit down to just one run. The Sharks then added four more runs in the inning, courtesy of RBI singles by Chris Walker and Junior Spivey, as well as an RBI double by Bryant Nelson that scored center fielder Wayne Lydon and gave the home team a 9-6 lead.
With a three run lead, the Riversharks put the ball in the hands of closer Julio Guerrero, who picked up his first save of the year by retiring the side while striking out two batters.
The Riversharks and Bluefish will play wrap up their three game series tomorrow at 11:05am. Lefty Ryan DiPietro (1-3, 4.47) will take the mound for the Riversharks, and he will be opposed by right handed pitcher Gary Knotts (2-5, 4.22) from Bridgeport.
