Sharks Bite Bears Snap 8 Game Skid The Riversharks defeated the Newark Bears by a final score of 9-2 today, breaking an eight game losing streak. Camden pitcher Nate Bump (8-2) picked up the win, as he pitched 5 scoreless innings, scattering 6 hits, and fanning one batter. The loss was charged to Newark’s Edgar Martinez (1-3), who gave up 7 runs, on 7 hits in 5 innings of work. With the win, the Riversharks’ season tally improves to 24-30, while Newark falls to 29-25.
The Riversharks took an early 1-0 lead in the 2nd inning of this contest. First baseman Jon Knott led off the inning by crushing a fly ball to center field for a stand up double. He then scored when Vito Chiaravollotti looped a single into centerfield. The run gave Chiaravollotti his 24th RBI of the season.
Camden added to their lead in the third inning, and made the score 3-0. Right fielder Jeff Vincent drew a one out walk, stole second base, and then advanced to third on an infield hit by Chris Walker. The next batter of the inning was second baseman Junior Spivey, who singled to right field, scoring Vincent, and eventually scoring Walker, thanks to a throwing error by Newark’s Michael Sandoval.
The Riversharks took control of the game in the fourth inning, as they added 4 more runs to their lead. Chiaravollotti drew a one out walk, and then made his way to third base when Brian Burgamy launched a ground rule double to center field. With two runners in scoring position, catcher Jason Jacobs doubled down the left field line, driving in two runs, and giving Camden a 5-0 lead. The next batter was Vincent, whose single to center advanced Jacobs to third base. Vincent then stole second base, and watched Jacobs score, courtesy of a sacrifice fly by left fielder Wayne Lydon. The next batter was Walker, who notched an infield single that plated Vincent, and gave the home team a 7-0 lead.
The offensive onslaught continued for the home team in the bottom of the 7th inning, as they took a 9-0 lead. Spivey reached base on a fielder’s choice, and then came around to score when Knott tripled to right field. The next batter was shortstop Bryant Nelson, who singled to left and picked up his ninth RBI of the season as Knott crossed the plate.
The Bears finally got on the scoreboard in the eight inning, as they cut the Riversharks’ lead down to 9 to 2. But it was too little to late for the visitors, and their rally fell will short. With a commanding seven run lead heading into the final inning, Camden put the game in the hands of reliever Michael Flannery, who worked his way out of a bases loaded jam to shut the door on Newark.
The Riversharks and Bears will wrap up their three game series tomorrow at 1:05pm. Right handed pitcher Dewon Brazelton (2-3, 3.24) will take the mound for the Riversharks, and will be opposed by righty Shane Komine (1-1, 4.02) from Newark. Limited seating for the game is still available. For more information, or to purchase tickets visit www.riversharks.com.
