Camden Riversharks CAMDEN 8 6 0
Newark Bears NEWARK 4 13 1
Sharks Beat Up Bears, 8-4
The Camden Riversharks defeated the Newark Bears 8-4 tonight, giving the team their third win a row. Tom Davey (5-0) picked up his fifth win of the season, as he allowed just 3 runs and 8 hits in 5 innings of work. The loss was charged to Newark’s Ryan Bukvich (2-4) who gave up 5 runs in 2 innings pitched. With the win, the Riversharks record moves to 19-17, as does Newark’s.

The Bears jumped out to an early lead, as Camden starter Tom Davey struggled to find his rhythm in the first inning. Leadoff hitter Tike Redman started the game with a base hit, and then advanced to second base when Jay Gibbons drew a full count walk. The next batter was Carl Everett, who laced a single to center field, scoring Redman, and putting the Bears ahead 1-0.

The Sharks were quick to answer in the bottom of the 1st, and tied the game. Wayne Lydon drew a leadoff walk, and then stole his league leading 17th base of the season as he moved to second base. Two batters later, right fielder Val Majewski ground out to second base, but drove home Lydon in the process, and knotted the game at 1-1.

In the second inning, an RBI base hit by Anthony Manuel gave the Bears a one run lead that they would not hold for very long. In the bottom half of the inning, Camden’s Brian Burgamy drew a seemingly harmless one out walk, that proved to be very costly for the visitors. Newark catcher Salomon Manriguez attempted to pickoff Burgamy at first, but his throw sailed all the way into right field, giving Burgamy time to round the bases and tie the game a 2-2.

The Riversharks exploded in the 3rd, as they sent all nine batters to the plate and scored six runs in the inning. The first three batters of the inning were walked by Newark starter Ryan Bukvich, who was then pulled in favor of reliever Oneli Perez. Perez’s first pitch of the game hit Camden’s Jon Knott, and drove in a run that was charged to Bukvich. Two batters later, Burgamy doubled to left field, driving in two more runs, and giving Camden a 5-2 lead. But the Sharks were not done scoring yet though. With two runners in scoring position, second baseman Bryant Nelson homered to right field, making the score 8-2, and giving the home team a comfortable cushion to work with.

The Bears pulled back one run in the fifth inning, as Gibbons and Everett again did the damage for Newark. The pair hit back to back doubles, giving Everett his third hit and second RBI of the night, and cutting Camden’s lead to five runs.

Newark continued to chip away at the Riversharks’ lead in the 8th inning. Charlton Jimerson leadoff the inning with a single up the middle, and then stole second base. The next batter was Rob Mackowiak, who doubled to left field, plating Jimerson, making the score 8-4.

With a four run lead heading into the final inning, the Riversharks put the game in hands of closer Tracy Thorpe. Despite allowing two base runners, Thorpe retired the side without giving up any runs, and the Sharks won the game by a final margin of 8-4.

The Riversharks and Bears will play game two of their three game series tomorrow night at 7:05pm. Lefty Josh Brey (0-0, 6.75 ERA) will take the mound for the Riversharks, and he will be opposed by right handed pitcher Bobby Brownlie (2-2, 3.65 ERA) from Newark. Limited seating is still available for tomorrow’s game. For more information, or to purchase tickets visit www.riversharks.com.
