Storms tormented the east coast Thursday night, canceling three of the four Atlantic League games scheduled. The Camden Riversharks had escaped the weather, flying to Sugar Land, TX to begin four game series with the Skeeters.
The Skeeters, who have the worst record in the Atlantic League, have had the Riversharks number this season. The 'Sharks finished the first half 3-and-7 against Sugar Land and had been outscored 62-45 in the first ten meetings.
Camden took an early lead in Thursday's game, but the Skeeters attacked in the middle innings, scoring the final seven runs of the ballgame to take game one, 8-5, at Constellation Field.
Chris Walker, who's power numbers out of the leadoff spot have been impressive this season, took Skeeters (8-6, 37-47) starter Scott Kazmir deep to open the ball game and put Camden (7-6, 41-41) out in front, 1-0, early.
Sugar Land responded in the home half of the first. Jason Lane grounded out to Brian Burgamy for the second out of the inning, allowing Dominic Ramos to score from third.
With the score still tied, Chris Walker came up with the bases loaded in the fourth and launched a grand slam, his second home run of the game and ninth of the season. The round-tripper gave Walker a season-high five RBIs in one game.
Kevin Reese returned to the mound in the home frame, now with some insurance, but Reese, who had been cruising along, ran into trouble with the long ball himself. Aaron Bates hit a two-run shot in the fourth to cut the lead in half.
Back-to-back doubles in the fifth from Josh Pressley and Bates put up a three spot for Sugar Land, giving them the lead. Reese (3-4) was pulled after that, going 4.2 innings and allowing six runs on eight hits.
Spencer Steedley got tagged in the eighth with back-to-back jacks from Pressley and Lane, providing some insurance and putting the 'Sharks away for good. Lane, a former major leaguer, has dominated Camden this season, hitting .452 (14-for-31) with three home runs, seven doubles and 14 RBIs in nine games.
After Kazmir lasted just 3.1 innings, the Sugar Land bullpen shutout Camden the rest of the way. Pedro Liriano (5-3) picked up the win after going 2.2 innings and giving up just one hit. Jeff Farnsworth delivered a perfect inning against his old club, Roberto Giron worked around a walk in the eighth and Gary Majewski went 1-2-3 in the ninth to pick up his thirteenth save of the season.
The Sharks and Skeeters resume their four-game set Friday in Sugar Land, Texas. Bobby Livingston goes for the Skeeters, taking on Bryan Corey for the Riversharks. Camden returns home on Monday to host the Lancaster Barnstormers for a four-game home-and-home series. New and Notes:
Spencer Steedley has allowed nine earned runs this season. Eight of them have come against the Sugar Land Skeeters.
Jeff Farnsworth has given up just one run in five appearances since the Riversharks traded him to the Skeeters.
Sugar Land has a winning record against just two teams (6-4 against York, 8-3 against Camden).
Jake Eigsti went 2-for-3 on the day and has hit safely in five of his last six games.
Chris Walker's two home runs give Camden 27 as a team for the month of July, the most in the Atlantic League.
The Riversharks did not commit an error for the second straight game. They had committed nine errors in the previous four.
