SHARKS SPLIT DOUBLEHEADER WITH PATRIOTS
Long Ball Earns Victory In Game 1, Sloppy Defense Costly In Nightcap
CAMDEN- Jason Fitzgerald broke a 2-2 tie with a long homerun to right field, as the Riversharks went on to beat the Somerset Patriots in the first game of the doubleheader on Tuesday night at Campbell’s Field.

Somerset jumped out of the gate with two runs in the first inning off Sharks starter, Greg Powell. Ryan Radmanovich (2-3) ripped an RBI single to put the Patriots in front 1-0. The Patriots made it 2-0 when Jeremy Owens hit what should have been an inning ending double play, but Powell’s throw to second dribbled into centerfield, allowing Jeff Nettles to score from third.

The Riversharks evened things up in the home half of the first on a 2-run blast by Brad Strauss (7). Strauss went 2-3 with two runs scored. Mark Defilice suffered the loss for Somerset, falling to 3-3 on the season. He allowed three runs on ten hits in five innings of work.

With the game tied in the bottom of the 6th, Jason Fitzgerald launched the first pitch he saw from DeFilice off the top of the scoreboard. The blast was his 3rd of the season and extended his hitting streak to a league high 20 games.

Greg Powell settled down to earn his team-leading 12th win. The Temple University product gave up two runs (one earned) on eight hits, lasting the full seven innings.

Lino Connell went 2-3 in his Riversharks debut.

GAME 2

In a game that featured seven errors, the Somerset Patriots prevailed over the Riversharks by a score of 9-8, earning a split in the doubleheader on Wednesday night at Campbell’s Field. The loss, coupled with Atlantic City’s win over Bridgeport, leaves the Sharks in a tie for first place in the South Division with the Surf.

Somerset put a two spot on the board in the 1st inning, thanks to Ryan Radmanovich’s 2-run double off Sharks starter Mark Ion. Ion, who makes most of his appearances out of the bullpen, took the loss, falling to 1-4 on the year. He allowed six runs (four earned) on six hits in 4.1 innings of work.

With the score tied at two and the bases loaded in the top of the 2nd, Ion got Radmanovich to hit a high popup on the infield, that should have gotten Camden out of the jam. However, there was a mix up between the catcher and third baseman and the ball tipped off Brad Strauss’ glove, allowing two runs to score. The Riversharks committed five errors on the night.

Patriots starter, Nick Stocks, pitched into the 7th inning, surrendering seven runs (four earned) on ten hits and five strikeouts. Meanwhile, Somerset had several defensive miscues of their own. A throwing error in the 1st inning on a Dwight Maness bunt single, plated Vic Gutierrez all the way from first base. Gutierrez was a perfect 4-4 with two runs scored. Stocks earned the win, improving to 4-3.

Camden grabbed the lead in the 2nd inning, when Jason Fitzgerald came around to score on a throwing error by catcher, Fernando Lunar. Fitzgerald went 2-4 in the game, extending his hit streak to a league high 21 games.

Somerset scored runs in each of the final three innings to break the game open. They took the lead in the 5th, Lunar atoning for his earlier mistake with an RBI single. In the 9th, Emiliano Escandon put the Patriots on top 9-5 with a 2-run homerun to right off reliever Josh Laxton.

Camden made things interesting in the bottom of the 9th, when LJ Biernbaum hit his 14th homerun of the year, a 2-run blast to make it a 9-8 ballgame. But Robert Marquez got Brad Strauss to fly out to left to end the game, notching his 7th save of the season.

The series concludes on Thursday night, with southpaw Jaime Steward getting the start for the Riversharks.
