Usually 15 hits in a ball game will be enough to get a win, but in what continues to be a second half of the season that goes against conventional wisdom, that was not the case for the Camden Riversharks Sunday night.
The York Revolution put up eight runs, including five before an out was recorded in the first inning, to beat the Riversharks, 8-6, in the rubber match of a three-game set at Campbell’s Field.
Bryan Corey, coming off one of his best starts of the season, took the hill for Camden (5-4, 39-39) but ran into trouble right away. The first seven hitters reached for the Revs (4-6, 40-40) on four hits, two walks and an error. The error, a misplayed ground ball by first baseman Brian Burgamy, was the seventh committed by Camden in the series.
The big blows in the inning were a two-run double from Andres Perez and an RBI single from James Shanks. The other two runs scored on the ground ball that went through Burgamy’s back hand and into right field.
The ‘Sharks responded with ferocity in the home half, with each of the first four batters getting hits. Chris Walker doubled to lead off the game and scored immediately on an Eduardo Perez single.
Burgamy crushed a double off the top of the right field wall to put two in scoring position and Pedro Feliz followed with his own double to plate another run. Raul Padron grounded out in the next at bat to score Burgamy.
The bullpen combination of Blake King and Eddy Camacho put up all zeros through five innings, giving the Sharks a chance to come back. They did so in the fifth when Pedro Feliz hit a solo home run and Raul Padron singled and eventually came around to score on a wild pitch, tying the game at 5-5.
The game didn’t stay tied long. Mariano Gomez took the hill for Camden and gave up a single, double and a two-run triple to Scott Grimes. Gomez (3-2) then gave up a sacrifice fly to Ramon Castro to complete the scoring.
The Riversharks loaded the bases with two down in the seventh and Chris Walker just missed one, sending a deep fly ball to center that hung up for Grimes to end the inning. The Sharks stranded 12 base runners in the game, including twice leaving the bases loaded.
Burgamy hit a solo home run in the eighth to cut into the lead. It was his twelfth of the season, fourth in six games and the Riversharks nineteenth as a team in the month of July. The power wasn’t enough, though, Chris Walker bounced out to second to end the ball game, representing the tying run.
Ricardo Gomez picked up his fifth save and second in three nights to give the Revolution the series win and snap the Riversharks three-series win streak. The Sharks look to rebound on Monday, when the Lancaster Barnstormers come to town for a three game series.
Sean Jarrett will go for the Sharks. Lancaster has not announced who will be starting for them on Monday. Stay tuned to riversharks.com as well as social media for all updates as they develop.
