Riversharks Fall to Barnstormers
POSTED: 5/8/2009

The Riversharks dropped a tough one on Friday night, 5-1, at the hands of the Lancaster Barnstormers. The Barnstormers broke open a tie game with a four-run seventh.

Lancaster took a 1-0 lead in the third inning, when Lloyd Turner doubled to drive in Rodney Medina, who had singled off starter Dewon Brazelton with two outs in the inning.

Brazelton wouldn't give up another run over his six total innings of work, but the Riversharks' bullpen would let them down in the seventh.

After a solo home run by Val Majewski tied the game at 1 in the top of the seventh, Mike Flannery came in to relieve Brazelton. Bryan Sabatella led off the bottom of the inning with a single, and then moved over to second on a single by Amadeo Zazueta. Medina walked to load the bases with just one out, and that prompted manager Joe Ferguson to go to his bullpen once again.

Anthony Capella came in for the 'sharks, and had to face Turner straight out of the gates. Turner has been the hottest Barnstormer hitter in the early part of the season, leading the team's current players in batting average, on-base percentage, and hits. He came through once again against Capella, singling home Michael Campbell (who had reached on a fielder's choice). Danny Bravo then scored Zazeuta on a sacrifice fly, and former Rivershark L.J. Biernbaum hit the Barnstormers' third consecutive single, which cleared the bases, and made the score 5-1.

Eric Ackerman threw eight great innings for Lancaster, giving up just the one run, on the solo shot by Majewski. He earned the win, to improve to 2-0. Flannery took the loss, and is now 0-1 on the year.

The 'sharks get another crack at the Barnstormers on Saturday evening at 6:30. Wayne Franklin is slated for his first start of the season for the 'sharks, while Ben Fritz will go for Lancaster. Check out the link directly below this article for the live broadcast.
