Riversharks Split Double Header
Game Two Called Due to Rain
POSTED: 5/6/2009

The Riversharks and Bluefish split their double header at Campbell’s Field tonight. A strong pitching performance by Riversharks pitcher Brian Lawrence led Camden to an easy 5-1 victory in game one. In game two, the Riversharks tried to rally from an early six run deficit, but the comeback fell short when the game was called in the sixth inning due to rain.

Game 1 Recap
The Camden Riversharks won their third game in a row today, as they defeated the Bridgeport Bluefish 5-1 in the first game of a double header. Riversharks pitcher Brian Lawrence improved his record to 2-0 with a very strong outing, pitching all seven innings and allowing one unearned run on only three hits. Franklin Perez gets the loss for the Bridgeport Bluefish, as he gave up five earned runs, on six hits, in four innings pitched.

The Bluefish jumped out to an early first inning lead in this game, as Henry Mateo singled to right field and advanced to second base when Riversharks’ right fielder Val Majewski misplayed the ball. Bridgeport then played a bit of small ball and sacrificed Mateo over the third with a well placed bunt by Ed Rogers, and then brought him around to score with a sacrifice fly by Luis Lopez.

The Riversharks were quick to answer in the bottom of the first, as Bridgeport pitcher Franklin Perez struggled to find the strike zone. He surrendered a one out walk to Brent Abernathy, who then reached third base when Val Majewski laced a line drive to center field. Perez then walked Junior Spivey to load the bases. The next batter for Camden was first baseman Brett Bonvechio, who flied out to deep center field, but drove home Abernathy in the process, and tied the game at 1-1.

The Riversharks went on the offensive again in the fourth, as designated hitter Vito Chiaravolloti drew a leadoff walk. Wayne Lydon then doubled down the left field line, advancing Chiaravolloti to third in the process. Two batters later, catcher Jason Jacobs drew a walk, and loaded the bases for Chris Walker. Walker crushed a base clearing triple to left field, giving the Riversharks a 4 –1 lead. Camden then added one more run in the inning, courtesy of a perfectly executed suicide squeeze by Brent Bonvechio and the speedy Chris Walker, who scored easily on the play.

Lawrence continued to dominate from the mound, and did not need any assistance from the bullpen in the abridged seven inning game, as Camden went on to win 5-1. The Riversharks and Bluefish will play the second game of this makeup double header tonight.

Game 2 Recap...
The Camden Riversharks lost game two of their double header with the Bridgeport Bluefish, as the game was called in the sixth inning, with Camden trailing 6-4. Riversharks starter Ryan Drese (1-2) was charged with the loss, while Bridgeport’s Kyle Jackson improved his record to 3-0 with the win.

The Bluefish struck first in game two, scoring six runs in the third inning. An RBI single by designated hitter Jesse Hoorelbeke with the bases loaded drove in two runs and gave Bridgeport an early lead. A fielding error by Kyle Haines allowed the next batter, Brandon Sing, to reach base, and Luis Lopez came around to score on the play, making the score 3-0 in favor of the visitors.

Though Riversharks fans were hoping that a 26 minute rain delay in the middle of the third inning would cool down the Bluefish, it did not. Once play resumed, catcher Charlie Fisk stepped to the plate with two runners on and belted a three run homerun over the left field wall, making the score 6-0.

The Riversharks responded quickly and pulled back three runs in the bottom of the third, cutting the Bluefish lead in half. Second baseman Brian Finegan started the rally with a leadoff double, and then came around to score on an RBI single by Frederick Torres. Chris Walker then stepped to the plate and smashed an RBI triple off the right field wall, scoring Torres. With Walker on third, Junior Spivey blooped a single to right field, giving the Sharks their third and final run of the inning.

The Riversharks cut into Bridgeport’s lead again in the fifth inning, as catcher Frederick Torres got things started with a leadoff triple. He then came home to score on a sacrifice fly by Chris Walker, who picked up his second RBI of the game, and made the score 6-4 in favor of the Bluefish.

The rain returned to Campbell’s Field in the top of the sixth inning, and after a 30 minute rain delay, home plate umpire Dan Wilson decided to call the game. The final score after 5.2 innings was Bridgeport Bluefish 6, Camden Riversharks 4.

With the loss, the Riversharks record falls to 8-4, while Bridgeport’s record improves to 5-7. The Riversharks and Bluefish will finish their four game series tomorrow, with a special 11 a.m. start time for the game. Call 1-866-SHARKS-9 or visit www.riversharks.com for tickets.
