The Riversharks announced today that infielder Marquez Smith was signed by the Boston Red Sox organization and will join their Double-A affiliate, the Portland Sea Dogs.
“We were very excited when Marquez joined the team this year,” said Manager Jeff Scott. “We were disappointed when he left for Mexico but we understood and after his return, he played outstanding. We wish him all the best and I expect to see him playing Triple-A ball soon.”
Smith played in 23 games for the Riversharks and was leading the team in batting average (.363) before he was signed. In addition, he hit three homeruns and had 20 RBIs. He hit a grand slam in his final at bat as a Rivershark.
Smith was originally drafted by the Chicago Cubs in 2007 and is the second Riversharks player to be signed by a Major League affiliate this week. Pitcher Jason Bergmann was picked up by the Colorado Rockies two days prior.
The Riversharks are hosting the 2012 Atlantic League All-Star Game, presented by Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey, on Wednesday, July 11 at 7:05 p.m as well as a celebrity softball game presented by “Jaws Youth Playbook”. The softball game begins at 5 p.m. and includes legendary Philadelphia athletes including Ron “Jaws” Jaworski, Larry Bowa, Steve Carlton and many more. To purchase tickets, call 1-866-SHARKS-9.
